The City of Carthage Summer Recreation Program has  about 1,000 young people involved from throughout the county.  Recreational areas in the city total 65 acres.  Carthage public facilities include two city parks with club houses, two pavilions, four lighted tennis courts, two lighted basketball courts, nine softball and baseball fields, four soccer fields, and two walking trails.

Collegiate and High School Sports are an integral part of our community.  Within just over an hour's drive is Starkville, a college town for more than a century. It is surrounded by the energy and enthusiasm the university brings. Boasting an enrollment of more than 15,000 students, 700 faculty members, and an alumni family of over 82,000, Mississippi State University is the largest university in the state. MSU serves up exciting SEC (Southeastern Conference) sports action with their championship football, basketball and baseball teams.   Other Division I Schools the University of Mississippi (SEC), the University of Mississippi (Conference USA), and the University of Alabama (SEC) are just a few hours away.

Low Head Dam, Leake County Water Park, and Coal Bluff Park at the upper mouth of the Reservoir on the Pearl River offer wide variety of outdoor facilities and opportunities for recreation.   Golden Memorial east of Walnut Grove on Highway 492 is the only state park in the county.

 

The Natchez Trace Parkway, one of only two national parkways in the country, runs the length of the Ross Barnett Reservoir’s north shore.   Part of the National Park System, this two lane road closely follows the course of the original Trace, a 440-mile Indian trail stretching from Nashville, TN, to Natchez, MS.  Camping, picnic areas, and recreational opportunities abound with scenic beauty in all seasons for the traveler. www.scenictrace.com

The Ross Barnett Reservoir is located on 48,000 acres of land about 25 miles southwest of Carthage.  The reservoir is  33,000 acres of fish-filled waters and has 105 miles of shoreline, public parks on the water, marinas, four campgrounds and boundless opportunities for outdoor adventures -  fishing, sailing, water-skiing, bird watching, camping, and picnicking. The Leake County Water Park is located 7 miles south of the Highway 25 and Highway 16 intersection off Mississippi Highway 25.  The Water Park has 33 camp sites with water and electrical hookups and grills, boat launching, open-air pavilion, showers, swimming pool and pool house, restrooms, laundry room, picnicking, on an oxbow lake on Pearl River.  For info, call

Low Head Dam Park is located 7 miles south of the intersection of Highway 25 and Highway 16.  The Park has a sandbar beach on Pearl River, a boat dock, 13 camp pads with electricity and water, and restrooms. For information, call 601-654-9359 or visit the website.

Coal Bluff Park is about 14 miles south of the Intersection of Highway 16 and 25.  The park has lighted tennis courts, fish pond, playgrounds, swimming pool, volleyball court, 68 camp pads with electricity and grills, primitive camping, restrooms, showers, laundry room, and open air pavilion.  For information, call 601-654-7726 or visit the website.

Golden Memorial State Park is located on Mississippi Highway 492 at the site of the historic Golden School, three miles east of Walnut Grove.  Golden Memorial has many picnic sites with tables and grills, two pavilions with grills and restrooms, nature trail, fishing and boating on a 13-acre lake.  For information call 601-253-2237 or visit the website.
